ENLIGHTENMENT BY SELF-INQUIRY–pt198

In practice, Self-Inquiry is the dissolution of belief in false definitions attributed to one's identity.  Such definitions yield the delusion of the self being distinct from the Absolute, of one's identity being that of a separate Individual or Ego-entity.  The relinquishment of these false definitions, or Mis-identifications, is essential in knowing the Self.

Where is the World except in your Mind ?  Realize your Self & then all is realized.  If you dream & see several men, & then wake up & recall your Dream, do you try to ascertain if the persons of your Dream creation are also awake ?

Don't chase your shadow thoughts & your shadow Mind with mind-control techniques because these techniques are also shadows. Instead, go back to the Source of the shadow-Mind & stay there. When you abide in that place, you will be happy, & the desire to go chasing after shadow thoughts will no longer be there.

What does not exist always, what is not always, such is not one's Natural State (sahaja), because it is not actually one's essential Existence.  What does not exist always ?  Material things & the World, the Body, Sense Perceptions, Thoughts, & the Ego.  All these are transient.

Sages may appear to not mix with others because there are no others to mix with.  The Self is the one & only Reality.  When we say "Self" we refer to the Unlimited, but when you add "men" to it, you limit the meaning. There is only one Infinite Self.

Mind  is just a shadow.  Attempts to catch it and control it are futile. They are just shadows chasing shadows. It's like when a small boy who runs down the street, trying to catch up with the head of his shadow. He never manages because no matter how fast he runs, the shadow of his head is always a few feet ahead of him.  An onlooker suggested: "Put your hand on your head."  When the boy followed this instruction, the shadow hand caught up with the shadow head.  But you can't control or eliminate a shadow by chasing it or by putting a shadow hand on it.

Consciousness, without which anything appended to Consciousness, is the Natural State (sahaja) of the Self.   Of all one's Ideas & Perceptions, which of them can be said to actually be one's True Nature ?  Though one may regard the clearer more spiritual Concepts & Perceptions as closer than cloudier ones, the clearest Concepts & Perceptions, being mere reflections of something beyond, none of them are actually the Consciousness itself.  Consciousness, which is of the nature of the Self, transcends all Concepts & Perceptions.  It is just so & always so.  Therefore to abide in the Natural State of the Self, to know the ever–present nature of  Existence & Consciousness, practice Self-Inquiry to know what is ever–present without a break for all Time.

The Self alone is the Reality; the World & the rest of it are not.  The realized being does not see the World as different from himself.  The Sage’s Realization leads to the uplift of humanity without the latter being aware of it. The help is imperceptible but is still there. A Sage helps the whole of humanity, unknown to the latter.

Realization of the Self is the greatest help that can be rendered to humanity.  Therefore, the Sages are said to be helpful, though they remain in forests.  But it should not be forgotten that solitude is not in forests only.  It can be had even in towns, in the thick of Worldly occupations.

The Senses, though, do not know of themselves.  The Senses are in themselves as inert as the sensed objects.  No Sense Object exists apart from the Senses.  All is within the Senses. Your Senses are not traveling "out there" to perceive Objects.  The Objects are conjured up within the Sensory experience.  The sensing experience is conceived in the Mind.  Sensing is under the Mind's power.  The Mind must be in a certain state in order to create the Senses within it.

Solitude is a function of the Mind. A man attached to Desire cannot get solitude wherever he may be.  A detached man is always in solitude.

One might be engaged in work & be free from Desire & keep up solitude.  Work performed with Attachment is a shackle, whereas work performed with Detachment does not affect the Doer.  He is, even while working, in solitude.

It does not make a difference if it is in the Past or the Future or the Present.  It is still just a Sense Perception.  By "World" is meant the entire, Objective sphere of experience, including the billions of years of Time, the countless light years of Space, all the matter, all the motion of that matter, indeed all of it, however perceived in whatever manner, by ever so many beings who are known in their Multiplicity through your Senses.

If the eyes are closed, it is nirvikalpa samadhi.

If open, it is (though differentiated, still in absolute repose) savikalpa samadhi.

The ever-present state is the Natural State sahaja (sahaja nirvikalpa samadhi).

  

Without the Hearer there cannot be hearing.  Without the Seer there cannot be vision. The Subject & Object appear only after the Mind has arisen. The Mind comprises them.

Memory & forgetfulness are located in the Mind (chitta).

If when you wake up in the morning, or in the afternoon or evening, you have the idea that the World is coming to you, or that now you have come to your Senses, you have indeed come to the Senses, which is a mode of the Mind.  You have not entered a World.  The World was not waiting for you.  The World is only in the Mind.  One who knows for certain that the World is only in the Mind cannot be disturbed by anything in this World.  So his Peace remains imperishable.  Similarly, he cannot be frightened by anything in this World & his Happiness remains fearlessly.

Who was it that slept ?  You did not say in your sleep that you slept.  You say it now in your Wakeful state.  The Ego therefore is the same in Wakefulness, Dream, & Sleep.  Find out the underlying Reality behind these States.  That is the Reality underlying these.  In that State there is Existence alone.  There is no you, nor I, nor he; no Present, nor Past, nor Future.  That State is beyond Time & Space, beyond expression.  It is ever there.
