Mind & Happiness 94

The superficial differences between Waking & Dream are not differences in substance, but only differences in quality. Just because the World we perceive in Waking appears to be more lasting & internally consistent than the World we perceive in Dream, we cannot reasonably conclude thereby that it is not merely a product of our wonderful power of imagination & self-deception.

The differences that we can point out between our experience in Waking & our experience in Dream can be reasonably accounted for in another way. The reason why the World we perceive in Waking appears to be more lasting & internally consistent than the World we perceive in Dream is that we are more strongly attached to our Waking Body than we normally are to any Body that we identify as our self in a Dream.

If we experience any severe shock, pain, fear or excitement in a Dream, we usually wake up immediately from that Dream, because we do not feel strongly attached to the Body that we then in the Dream identify as "I".  In contrast, we can usually bear a much greater degree of shock, pain, fear or excitement in the Waking state without swooning, because we feel very strongly attached to this Body that we now identify as "I".  [Swooning or fainting, which is a stress-driven transition from the Waking State to something like a Deep Dreamless Sleep State, then compares to the stress-driven transition from the Dream state to the Waking state. The 2 processes seem to be going on sort of in a different direction, but the comparisons still holds.]

Thus, because our attachment to the Body that we identify as "I" in a Dream is usually quite tenuous, our experience of the World that we see in that Dream is fleeting, fluid & often inconsistent.  In contrast, because our attachment to this Body that we now identify as "I" in this Waking state is very strong, our experience of the World that we now perceive around us generally appears to be more lasting, substantial & consistent.

However, even in our Waking state there are times when this World appears to be Dream-like & unreal, for example after we have been deeply absorbed in a reverie or day-dream, or in reading a book or watching a film, or after we have experienced an intense shock, joy or bereavement. The reality that we attribute to our Body & this World is therefore subjective & relative. All that we know of this World is what we experience in our own Mind, & is therefore colored by our Mind.

[A brief note of explanation  the other Blog noted below is entitled "Non-Duality & Science", & so the more Science oriented pages (from what I like to think of as a "comic book") have been posted there, while other chapters have been posted here. Science is a mental discipline that attracts some worthy admirers & participators.  Some of these, too few, are good prospects for the ancient teaching introduced here in many ways.  Otherwise certain Science topics like the Anthropic Principle, reinforce the general Theism which is a good idea in this materialistic age. A few other topics in Science, such as the Copenhagen II  Max Born  Von Neumann  Wigner model of Quantum Mechanics, are worthy entries to the extent that they introduce Consciousness into the physical Sciences. All that aside, the real topic here is the pinnacle as Advaita Vedanta, Non-Duality  that pinnacle being Ajata Vada, NoCreation. The great Teachers of the same include Sri Shankara & Sri Ramana Maharshi.  Both would support Theism in general & adaptations of Vedanta, such as Vishishtadvaita Vedanta  Qualified Non-Duality, for those not making headway in Ajata Vada, their present course of growth might be better served with a temporary involvement in Qualified Non-Duality. The scientist who perhaps best expresses the influence of Qualified Non-Duality in Science, for instance, would be the quintessential "NewAge" Quantum Physicist, Amit Goswami. And so to that source, & the Quantum Activism he currently advocates [with a 1course  degree program], along with more than a half-dozen good books & former participation in the controversial What the Bleep movie, to him I extend enthusiastic endorsement, for that Qualified Non-Duality described in the context of Science.  I do not stand so much "with him", as much as nearby saluting his good work. Again, as here, the goal is inserting Consciousness into Science & "saving the World."]
