Mind & Happiness 140

The "consciousness" that we imagine we see in other people & in other creatures is not actually experienced by us, but is only inferred by us, just as we infer that each person & creature that we see in a Dream has "consciousness".  The only Consciousness that we know directly & not by mere inference is our own Consciousness.  Since we know that our Consciousness is & since we do not exist apart from our Consciousness, our Consciousness is itself our Existence, & hence we experience it as "I exist".

Just as the "consciousness" that we see in all other people & creatures is only inferred by us, so too the "existence" that we see in all other things is only inferred by us. The only existence we know directly is our own Existence. The "existence" of all other things is known by us not directly but only through the imperfect channel of our Mind, our limited & distorted
Consciousness that feels "I am this Body."

The seemingly separate existence of other things deludes us & reinforces in our Mind the Illusion
that Existence or Reality is Divided, Mutable, & Relative.  The seemingly separate "existence" of other things depends upon the seemingly separate "existence" of our Mind, because it is known only by our Mind, & not by our Essential Non-Dual Consciousness of Existence, which knows only Itself & no separateness or otherness.

The seemingly separate "existence" of our Mind depends upon the real Existence of our Essential Consciousness "I exist", because without identifying that real Consciousness as Itself, our Mind would not appear to "know" either its own "existence" or the "existence" of any other thing.

However, since it appears & disappears, the separate "existence" of our Mind is not real Existence, but is only a semblance of Real Existence.  A thing that appears to be at one time, & ceases to be at some other time, is not Real Existence, but is only a "seeming" form of "existence" an "existence" which depends upon time & is therefore conditional.  If a thing really is, it must be at all times & under all conditions.

[A brief note of explanation  the other Blog noted below is entitled "Non-Duality & Science", & so the more Science oriented pages (from what I like to think of as a "comic book") have been posted there, while other chapters have been posted here. Science is a mental discipline that attracts some worthy admirers & participators.  Some of these, too few, are good prospects for the ancient teaching introduced here in many ways.  Otherwise certain Science topics like the Anthropic Principle, reinforce the general Theism which is a good idea in this materialistic age. A few other topics in Science, such as the Copenhagen II  Max Born  Von Neumann  Wigner model of Quantum Mechanics, are worthy entries to the extent that they introduce Consciousness into the physical Sciences. All that aside, the real topic here is the pinnacle as Advaita Vedanta, Non-Duality  that pinnacle being Ajata Vada, NoCreation. The great Teachers of the same include Sri Shankara & Sri Ramana Maharshi.  Both would support Theism in general & adaptations of Vedanta, such as Vishishtadvaita Vedanta  Qualified Non-Duality, for those not making headway in Ajata Vada, their present course of growth might be better served with a temporary involvement in Qualified Non-Duality. The scientist who perhaps best expresses the influence of Qualified Non-Duality in Science, for instance, would be the quintessential "NewAge" Quantum Physicist, Amit Goswami. And so to that source, & the Quantum Activism he currently advocates [with a 1course  degree program], along with more than a half-dozen good books & former participation in the controversial What the Bleep movie, to him I extend enthusiastic endorsement, for that Qualified Non-Duality described in the context of Science.  I do not stand so much "with him", as much as nearby saluting his good work. Again, as here, the goal is inserting Consciousness into Science & "saving the World."]

Other than Existence itself, nothing exists.  Since we always know our self as "I exist", our Essential Existence is itself our Consciousness of our Existence.  Our Consciousness of our Existence, our Knowledge "I exist", is the one fundamental basis of all our other "knowledge".  If we did not know "I exist", we could not know any other thing.  Whatever we may know, we know it only because we first know our own Existence as "I exist".

Therefore our fundamental knowledge "I exist"  our Real & Essential Self-Consciousness
or Existence-Consciousness  is the true foundation that underlies & supports the seeming  "existence" of all other things.  Without depending upon the support of our Existence, nothing else could appear to be.  All other things appear to exist only because we are. We are therefore the one Fundamental & Absolute Existence, other than which nothing exists.  Since nothing is other than us, we are Infinite, & include all things within our Self  that is, within our own Self-Conscious Existence. We are therefore the one Non-Dual & Infinite Existence.

Because the one Non-Dual Infinite Existence is our own Essential Self, which we always experience as "I exist", we refer to it as "our own" Existence.  However, though we have no Real Existence other than the one Infinite Reality, is it correct for us to consider it to be just "our" Existence ?  Since it is the only Existence that really is, is it not the Essential Existence of all things  of everything that appears to exist ?

Yes, to the extent that "things" exist, they do all share in the one common Existence of the Infinite Reality.  However, there is a fundamental difference between the "existence" that we imagine we see in other things & the Existence that we experience in our Self.

All the things that we know as other than our Self are only thoughts or mental images that exist in our own Mind, & therefore they are known not by themselves but only by our Mind.  But whereas other "things" are not conscious of their own "existence", we are conscious of our own Existence. Therefore, though in other "things" we know only "existence", in our Self we know both Existence & Consciousness.
