Sri Ramana Maharshi's Teaching is based on Knowledge of Reality, by the Reality, itself. So, it would not be right to call his Teaching a supposition, a doctrine, or anything similar. It is entirely of the True Nature of Transcendent Wisdom.  This Teaching does not involve the Mind.  It is not a setting forth of ideas, even well-arranged ideas. It is the revelation of True Knowledge of the Real Self, by the Real Self, for Itself. So, it does not include any of the Duality, or any of the Triads (Knower, Knowing, Known, etc.), that one wants to dissolve. Duality is thinking that there is a Triadic state & a nonTriadic State.  Sri Ramana's instruction deals directly with Reality.

The 3 States are seen as 3 only so long as Consciousness is not known as it is. Dream is to Deep Dreamless Sleep, emerging but within it, "forming" yet not really so, for it is within the Formless.   So also is the Waking State to Turiya (the 4th), which is actually pure Consciousness.  Turiya, or the Transcendent State, is just pure Consciousness, which, being beyond the 3 States, is beyond the notion of a "4th State".  So it is also called Turiyatita, "beyond the 4th". Consciousness remains as the one Existence, which is in, & which itself is, its Natural Innate State ever. The 2 States of Waking & Dream are not consistently present. Those States & Deep Dreamless Sleep are passing appearances.

The apparent "World" is like a cinema-show.  There is the Light on the screen & the shadows flitting across it impress the audience as the enactment of some piece.  If in the same play an audience also is shown on the screen as part of the performance, the Seer & the Seen will then both be on the screen.  Apply it to yourself.  You are the screen, the Self has created the Ego, the Ego has its thoughts which are displayed as the World.  In reality, all these are nothing but the Self.  If you see the Self, the same will be found to be all, everywhere & always. Nothing but the Self exists.

Realizing NonDual Liberation, Enlightenment by Self-Inquiry pt78

However you would define the World, as good or bad, or anything in between, however you would define the Individual, as being meritorious or not, or anything in between, & however you would define the Supreme Self, in whatever glorious terms, none of that can compare with remaining free of the Ego-"I" in which the Reality is known directly by oneself.  If identified with the Mind, it would not make a difference what kind of supposition you conceived or what doctrine was conceived on that basis, it still would be within the context of the Ego-"I"-assumption, which is the root of all Delusion.

The Self, Existence-Consciousness, is free of both Cause & Effect. In Self-Knowledge, neither the Veiling of the Reality nor the Illusion of Multiplicity, neither the non perception nor the misperception of real Existence.  The Self is Itself & knows itself as it is. From Existence-Consciousness comes Deep Dreamless Sleep.  From Deep Dreamless Sleep comes Dream, from Dream comes Waking.  Each succeeding State occurs within the preceding one.  All occurs within Existence-Consciousness, & that is what one truly is.  So it is better to say that the States of Mind, & the Worlds that appear in them, are in one's Self than that one is in those States. Being beyond the states, the Self is called "the 4th," yet it is only 1 & in its own State ever.

Do all the many "things" exist at all apart from the Self ?  Find it out. You think that you see them. The thought is projected out from the Self.  Find out from where it rises. Thoughts will cease to rise & the Self alone will remain.

In the State of Deep Dreamless Sleep, there is an absence of Waking & Dream thoughts & their content.  There is therefore no World, no Body, no Senses, no Ideas, no Memories, and no “Person" existing in the Deep Dreamless Sleep State.  Yet Existence-Consciousness still remains, & that Existence-Consciousness is the Self.  Even in the absence of thoughts in Deep Dreamless Sleep, the Self is unaffected by the absence of all else as it is when all else appears in the other 2 States.  Deep Dreamless Sleep is characterized by the presence of the Cause, but the absence of the Effect. [Pure "potentiality" without objective thought has Deep Dreamless Sleep called the "Causal" State or Plane.]

Therefore, it may be said that the unmanifest seeds of, or potential for Ignorance is present but not the effects of such Ignorance. In Deep Dreamless Sleep there is only the nonperception of Reality, while the Projection, or Hallucination of Multiplicity & Form is not present.

Who is to know the Self ?  Can the insentient Body know the Self ?  All the time you speak & think of your "I", yet when questioned you deny knowledge of it.  You are the Self, yet you ask how to know the Self. 

Your Self-Realization is the best help you can possibly offer "others".  But there are no others to be helped. For a realized being sees only the Self, just like a goldsmith estimating the gold in various items of jewelry sees only gold.  When you identify yourself with the Body then only the forms & shapes are there.  But when you transcend your Body the others disappear along with your body-consciousness.

However we would name & explain, from Dual to Non-Dual, the Individual, the World, & the Supreme, even if we give them exceedingly eloquent names with eloquent explanations, none of that would compare to remaining free of the Ego"I"notion. This is the best of all because whatever is built on the basis of an Ego"I"notion is only as real, or as unreal, as the Ego"I"notion itself.  Do we attempt to figure out what something is, or do we attempt to know ourselves ?  A supposition is a guess at what is. Truth transcends suppositions & is not realized through suppositions.  It is realized by direct Self-Inquiry that yields true Knowledge,

Everything experienced in a State ( Waking, Dream, & Deep Dreamless Sleep) changes within the state itself or changes with the changing of the State to another State. Only Existence-Consciousness remains the same, unaffected by the changes of such experiences & the change of State.  So what is present in the Waking State may be absent in the Dream State. What is present in a Dream is absent in Waking. W hat appears within a State is that "State of Mind" itself.  The Dreaming State of Mind itself appears as all that is experienced in the Dream.  So too is it with the Waking State experiences.  The State of Mind itself composes all that appears within it.

Knowing the Self is being the Self, & "being" means Existence, one's own Existence.  No one denies one's Existence any more than one denies one's eyes, although one cannot see them.  The trouble lies with your desire to objectify the Self, in the same way as you objectify your eyes when you place a mirror before them. You have been so accustomed to objectivity that you have lost the knowledge of yourself, simply because the Self cannot be objectified

If there is the Egonotion "I", then Individuality is built up, & the qualities of the Individual are conceived.  Just as the qualities of the Individual are conceived, so are the qualities of the World conceived, & when considering the Supreme (God) or the Supreme Self, all that is viewed in accordance with the perspective of that Individual.  Examine your own approach when you attempt to know what the World is, what the Supreme Self is, & what the Individual is. Is it as if you were approaching a topic of study, with naming, analyzing, & explaining ?  Certainly, wise Sages, have given names to these 3 things the Individual, the World, & the Supreme Self.  But what has been the purpose in their naming and explaining ? Those 3 are not objective, concrete realities. They have been named or explained only for the purpose of negation, of sweeping them aside, so that the real singular Existence is revealed.  That Triad appears so long as the Ego"I"notion exists. As long as the "I"notion exists, we treat the Supreme Self as if it were some object. We treat the World as if it were something objective.  This includes the characteristics, traits, qualities, & the tendencies accruing to the Individual, which are then treated as if they were objectively existing things in that World.

Thoughts move in modes & patterns.  Innumerable thoughts & modes are contained in States of Mind (like Waking, Dream, & Deep Dreamless Sleep). In the first 2, thought  projects itself into itself (the character seems to be thinking & knowing), & the content of thought changes according to those States. The Waking State is equivalent to the Dream. In both, the same multiplicity manifests.  In both, Subject & Object appear.  The same kinds of mental functions appear in both States.  In both, the same tendency to identify as a particular character with a particular Body exists.  Cause & Effect are present in both States. Both are characterized by a nonperception of Reality & a misperception of Reality, which are equivalent to not seeing a Rope & imagining it to be a Snake. These 2 States: Waking & Dreaming, are conflicting (which Body are we supposed to be ?) & mutually contradictory.

See if the unreal ever did "spring" from the Real.  There is no such thing as the "unreal",

from another standpoint. The Self alone exists. When you try to trace the Ego, which is the basis of the perception of the World & everything else, you find the Ego does not exist at all & neither does all this "Creation" that you see.

The Teaching of Non-Duality, Advaita Vedanta is the final, highest Knowledge, not a set of suppositions, for it does not begin by naming or explaining the World, the Individual, the Supreme. Advaita Vedanta begins with Existence.  It begins where we (Ego"I" Individuals) end.  Advaita Vedanta does not attempt to name or explain things that are supposed to exist, but rather aims at Self-Inquiry into the very Nature of Existence.  What is it that is called the Individual ?  However the Individual is named or explained, so in accordance with that is the World & the Supreme Self explained.

Since there are truly no "internal" & "external" aspects in a Dream, though in the Dream those appear, so it is with thought now in the Waking State in which this writing is probably appearing.  Even the largest thought occupies no Space, & the longest one endures for no time.  Therefore all that is conceived is Maya (Illusion).  One thinks, envisions, dreams, & such with no respect to physical things, such as when thinking of a large mountain or dreaming of being in another place.  We do not travel to those places & those things are not altered in any way.  So likewise, all is thought inclusive of the large & small, now & then, this & that, you & I, he & she, here & there; past, present, & future.  Again, no effect or from all things, all actions, all occurrences, Life & Death, & all that is considered the Universe-Individual-God (jagad-jiva-para). T he Self transcends all this, for it is free from though t.

Ignorance is forgetfulness of the Self.  Can there be darkness before the Sun ?  Similarly, can there be Ignorance before the selfevident & self-luminous Self ?  If you know the Self there will be no "darkness", no Ignorance, & no misery.  It is the Mind which feels the trouble & misery.  "Darkness" never comes nor goes.  See the Sun & there is no darkness.  Similarly, see the Self & Ignorance will be found not to exist.

The apparent interaction of things upon "thought" & thoughts upon "things" is entirely a play of thought, which is merely thoughts affecting thoughts. Thought itself projects itself into itself.  There is no "in" or "out" for such are only mere notions.  It is just like the appearance of a Dream thinker in a Dream.  There appear to be his perceptions of the objects & his interior thoughts, be they conceptions, associations, emotions, memories, etc.  The whole of the Dream, "inner" & "outer", is actually just composed of thought appearing in various ways.

The Ego does not exist.  Otherwise do you admit of 2 selves ?  How can
there be Ignorance in the absence of the Ego ?  If you begin Self-Inquiry,
the Ignorance which is already non-existent will be found not to exist. Or else you will say it has "fled" away.  Ignorance pertains to the Ego. Why do you think of the Ego & also suffer ?  What is Ignorance again ?  It is that which is nonexistent.

Suppositions, of whatever kind, involve naming or identifying or, in some way, defining oneself, the World, or the Supreme Self in relation to those suppositions, including suppositions regarding our own practice of Self-Inquiry. When we think about Self-Inquiry, do we do so with the assumption of being an Individual who is trying to realize, in a World, which he is attempting to transcend, & then also the Supreme Self, which we are trying to realize ?  All such suppositions fall far short of real Knowledge. Within the context of such suppositions, we have an idea of the Individual, the World, and the Supreme Self.  It is inherent in the very act of making such suppositions to define these things, but they are all considered only as long as the Ego"I"notion exists.

What is casually termed “mind" is only a collection, or movement, of thought.  It does not exist as such, and it is not an independent entity. If thought is absent, there is said to be no mind present. Thought itself is inert. When the knowing Consciousness is confounded with thought, there arises the notion of a separate knowing entity called the “mind." Consciousness is the knowing aspect and is not a thought. No thought is Consciousness itself. Consciousness is the Self, and thus the Self is free from thought and free of the mind. All that appears is only thought: the world, the body, the senses, subtle experience, and of course, thinking, itself. All are known in thought only.

Take care of yourself.  Let the World take care of itself.  See your Self.   If you are the Body there is the gross World also. If you are Spirit all is Spirit alone.  Free yourself first & then see if the question if "others" arises afterwards.

If there seems to be Ignorance, for whom is it ?  Yes, for the Ego. Remove the Ego & Ignorance is gone. Look for it, the Ego vanishes & the real Self alone remains. The Ego professing Ignorance is not to be seen. There is no Ignorance in Reality.  All Scriptures are meant to disprove the existence of Ignorance.

What does this say of the idea of individually knowing something ? What does it say about the Individual, or Ego"I" ?  What does it say about the entire Universe ?  Just One is all this because for the Self there is no creation, no World, no "this", no "other", or any such conception.  The same One Self is known as the Witness, which is infinite Consciousness, for those who are meditating in the Mind, & as the Self which alone exists, for those who have realized Reality.  There can be no difference in Thatt, ever.  Whether speaking of Pure Existence, or of "all this", still there is only One Existence. No change ever occurs for It.  We need never take the Experiencer, the Experiencing, & the objects of Experience to be real.  They are like images on a "Screen", they are Illusions. Such are artificial names given to the One Existence, as if it were divided among many things.

What is called “the mind" is only the combination of thought & Consciousness.  That combination is an Illusion.  It is the Illusion of combining the ever Formless with Form.  Consciousness is the Self & cannot truly be combined with thought, for the Self is Formless & will not change its Nature.  The Self is Infinite & will not be added to.  The Self is real Existence that cannot be combined with false appearances any more than the Rope can be combined with the imagined Snake, or the Sand with the Water of a mirage.

[Ramana]

The Ego-"I"-Self appears & disappears & is transitory, whereas the real Self is permanent. Though you are actually the true Self you wrongly identify the Real Self with the ego-self.

Master Nome

The One Reality alone has become both the Seer & the Seen. The emphasis is not so much that the One has changed its Nature, but the inquiry: "What is all this ?" is the point. In our experience, the Subject & the Object appear. The Power by which they appear, the Light by which they are known, the "Screen" on which they are displayed, the "Ground", or "Substrate", That which illumines, or knows, as well as that which appears  as "I", the Subject, & that which appears as the Object, the entire Universe, are all just One Reality, One Divine Essence. If we understand in this way, where is the room for believing that "the World is separate," "I am separate," & "“this is separate".  Just One appears as all this. To know the Reality, therefore, we must know that One, & that One as it is, not just as that One appears in this "picture", which is the Dream of this World. We must know the One's Existence as it actually is. To know the One's Existence, we need to know our own True Nature & realize our Nature to be that very One, the One of boundless Power, or God. When you have the idea, "I know this," "I experience this," the power of that knowing is the Self which is no small personal thing, but of boundless Power.

Thought, itself, is experienced as if all these things. All are only thought. Thoughts join only to other thoughts & affect only other thoughts. Thought appears as Ideas, & thought itself appears as the things that concern those Ideas. Thought cannot join with the Self & cannot affect the Self.  Therefore thought cannot bind.  Thoughts affect only thoughts. The preceding thoughts generally determine the succeeding thoughts.

There is no "goal" to be "reached".  There is nothing to be "attained".  You are the Self.  You exist always. Nothing more can be predicated of the Self than that it exists.  Seeing God or the Self is only being the Self or yourself.  Seeing is being.  You, being the Self, want to know how to attain the Self.  It is something like a man being at some place asking how many ways there are to reach that place & which is the best way for him. All that is required of you is to give up the thought that you are this Body & to give up all thoughts of the external things or the not-Self.

The Seer, the Subject, & also the Seen is all that is objective which in the Teaching of Non-Duality are like "images".  Reality as Existence is like the "Screen", the "Substrate" upon which all those "images" seem to be projected.  Reality as Consciousness is the Light" by whose illumination the Subject & Object can appear.  All of the forms, as an Effect, rest in the Cause, which is formless, but the Effect can never be different than the nature of the Cause. The Effect is the Cause appearing as the Effect.  The original Cause, which is God or the Supreme Self, is, therefore, all "this".

The Self is never an object & can never be the known. It is always Consciousness itself. Therefore, the Self is ever of the Nature that is Transcendent of thought.  The Self is not known by thought, which means it is ever undefined by thought & cannot be bound by thought, no matter what the thought is.

True Knowledge does not create a new being for you, it only removes your ignorant Ignorance.  Bliss is not added to your Nature, it is merely revealed as your true Natural State, Eternal & imperishable. The only way to be rid of your grief is to know & be the Self.  How can this be unattainable ?

People say that they are not able to know the Self that is allpervading. What can I do ?  Even the smallest child says, "I exist; I do this; this is mine."  So, everyone understands that the thing "I" is always existent. It is only when that "I" is there that there is the feeling that you are the Body, he is so & so, & so on. To know that the One that is always visible is one's own Self, is it necessary to search with a candle ?  To say that we
do not know the Real Nature of the Self which is not different but which is in one's own Self is like saying, "I do not know myself."

Master Nome

If there is an Ego"I", there must be a source or a cause of it, & for that which is before the "I", there originally was no "I".  If we consider the Universe as existing or appearing, & if we consider the Ego"I" as existing or appearing, there must be a Cause, or Essence, that appears as these very "things".  The Cause appears as the Effect. The Effect is only the Cause in that guise.  The original Cause, which is before "all", is Undifferentiated & One.  What then is the nature of the Effect ?  As Reality was originally, so it is now and always. What Power is it that creates the "I" in everyone ?  What is the Power that can bring forth the entire Universe ?

The Ego-"I" knows thought; but thought does not know the "I"."  The true "I" is the unknown Knower of all knowing: this is true Knowledge. None of the attributes of thought are those of the Self.  How then can thought pertain to the Self ?  How then can thought define or confine the Self ?  The Self is free from thought.  Thought can never conceive of the Self.  The Self is never an object of thought.  Thought always has an "objective" element in it.  The Self is ever nonobjective.  There is no such thing as a "nonobjective " thought.  Since the thought itself is always known & it is always the "thought of something", be it gross (physical) or subtle (mental).  The Self is never an object & can never be the Known.  It is always Consciousness itself.  Therefore, the Self is ever of the Nature that is Transcendent of thought.  The Self is not known by thought, which means it is ever undefined by thought & cannot be bound by thought, no matter what the thought is.

You may take up this or that spiritual practice to transcend non-existent limitations.  But if your spiritual practice itself assumes the existence of the limitations, how can it help you to transcend them ?  You are really the infinite Pure Existence, the Self.  You are always that Self & nothing but that Self.  Therefore, you can never be really ignorant of the Self. Your Ignorance is merely an imaginary Ignorance, like the Ignorance of the 10 Fools about the lost 10th man. It is this Ignorance that caused them grief.

Everything derives its "light" & its reality from the Absolute, but That  does not derive its Light or Reality from anything else. The Absolute does not depend on the World. The Absolute does not depend on the Ego"I".  The Absolute does not depend on anything else. Rather it, itself, has become all "this", without changing its Nature, for if its True Nature would change, it would not be all-powerful, & that which changed it would be all-powerful. One has become all this, & all this therefore is only that One.  You must know That as it is, within yourself.  It is the Reality in all that appears to exist. It is the Existence in all of the apparent Experiencers, or Seers.  It is the Consciousness in all the Knowing, Perceiving, & Cognizing. It is the only "thing" that there is.

The Self is changeless. Thought is changeful.  How, then, can thought pertain to the Self ?  How, then, can thought define or confine the Self ?  The Self is singular, stateless & modeless. Thought is multiple, appearing as thoughts, modes, & states. How, then, can thought pertain to the Self ?  How then can thought define or confine the Self ?  The Self is homogenous.  Thought has many aspects.  How, then, can thought pertain to the Self ?  How then can thought define or confine the Self ?  The Self is continuous Existence-Consciousness.  Thought is sporadic & each thought is momentary.  How then, can thought pertain to the Self ?  How then can thought define or confine the Self ?  The Self does not rise & has no disappearance.  The rise & fall of thought can be observed by anyone who meditates with depth.  How then can thought pertain to the Self ?  How then can thought define or confine the Self ?  Thought, being objective, is the Known.  Thought has no knowing power of its own. The Self is the Knower, the silent Witness of all thought.  The Self is Consciousness, which is the Knower, & the Mind is among the Known. Since this is always so, how then can thought pertain to the Self ?  How then can thought define or confine the Self  ?

In the parable of the "10th Fool", from where was the 10th man brought in ?
Was he ever lost ? By knowing that he had been there all the while, did they learn anything new ? The cause of their grief was not the real loss of anyone.  It was their own Ignorance, or rather, their mere supposition that one of them was lost. Such is the case with you. Truly there is no cause for you to be

miserable & unhappy. You yourself impose limitations on your True Nature of Infinite Existence, & then weep that you are but a finite creature.

Even in illusory Samsara, the perceived or felt sense of "vividness" comes from Reality. The Ego "I" & the Universe both seem "real". The source of their seeming "reality" is Reality itself. The One appears, as "many", as "I", as "this", as the "Seer", & as the "seen",” & as "the light" the illumination by which the "I" perceives "this". This One "thing" became the Knower, the Knowing, & the Known. Whether we comprehend that all this is really One or we comprehend that the One has become all this, the emphasis is not on "all this" but on the One. One Reality appears as you & as the Universe. One Reality appears as your apparent ability to know & to cognize the World, or Universe.  Yet that One has none of the limitations of the Subject or the Object.  Look for this One within you.  It is not a "thing".

The Self is silent & untouched, endowed with the Supreme, solitary power of Reality.  The Self does not contend with thought, as if thought were an enemy with its own power. Self-Inquiry entails freedom from the pursuit of delusive thoughts that, in the form of tendencies (vasanas), form the Illusion (samsara).  Self-Knowledge is not merely a blank Mind in which thought activity is temporarily stilled.  For Self-Realization, one should know the Self's freedom from thought & the True Nature of the Mind.  Inquiring: "For whom is this thought ?"  "For whom is this Mind ?", one should seek Knowledge of the Self, beyond all mental modes & states.  Inquiring: "Who am I ?" one should know true Existence, interior to any thought, more Formless than any thought, Transcendent of all thought, & ever free from all thought.

[Ramana]

In the Parable, Ten Foolish Men forded a stream & on reaching the other shore wanted to make sure that all of them had in fact safely crossed the stream. One of the 10 began to count, but while counting the others left himself out. "I see only 9.  Sure enough, we have lost one.  Who can it be ?" he said. 

"Did you count correctly ?" asked another, & did the counting himself.  But he too counted only 9. One after the other each of the 10 counted only 9, missing himself.  "We are only 9" they all agreed, "but who is the missing one ?" they asked themselves.  Every effort they made to discover the "missing" Individual failed.  "Whoever he is that is drowned", said the most sentimental of the 10 fools, "we have lost him."  So saying he burst into tears, & the others followed suit.

Seeing them weeping on the river bank, a sympathetic wayfarer inquired about the cause. They related what had happened & said that even after counting themselves several times they could find no more than 9. On hearing the story, but seeing all the 10 before him, the wayfarer guessed what had happened.  In order to make them know for themselves they were really 10, that all of them had survived the crossing, he told them, "Let each of you count for himself but one after the other serially, 1, 2, 3, & so on, while I shall give you each a blow so that all of you may be sure of having been included in the count, & included only once. The 10th missing man will then be found."

Hearing this they rejoiced at the prospect of finding their "lost" comrade & accepted the method suggested by the wayfarer.  While the kind wayfarer gave a blow to each of the 10 in turn,
he that got the blow counted himself aloud. "10" said the last man as he got the last blow in his turn. Bewildered they looked at one another, "We are 10" they said with one voice and thanked

the wayfarer for having removed their grief.

The Ego who is supposedly "inbetween", claiming the identity of Pure Existence, on the one hand, & the limitations of the Body form on the other, & who says, "I am undergoing this experience"    this is the one to be destroyed first, & he is destroyed by Self-Inquiry, by the Knowledge of his own nonexistence. Objective knowledge, training, & application of physical skills does not require an Ego-entity who believes he is 1/2Existence & 1/2Body. All those things be accomplished quite well without the Ego.

With Self-Inquiry to know the Self, one can see that thought is a power capable of appearing in multiple ways with varied content.  The same power of thought may appear individually, in patterns, in modes, or as states of Mind.  Knowing this, one can take Sri Ramana Maharshi's direct approach of liberating the Self from the Mind all at once.  We free our selves from the Mind, from thought, realizing that all Duality, which is all experience other than the Self, is a creation of the Mind.  Such creation is due to thoughts & is composed of thoughts.  Remaining free from thought requires one to remain free of dualistic notions regarding the Mind itself. The unmoving Self does not travel through the Mind, & thought does not drag the ever-still, transcendent Self about.

Self-Knowledge is not a knowledge to be acquired, so that acquiring it one may obtain Happiness.  It is one's ignorant outlook that one should give up. The Self you seek to know is truly yourself.  Your supposed Ignorance causes you needless grief like that of the 10 "foolish men" who grieved at the loss of the 10th man  who was never lost.

REALIZING NON–DUAL LIBERATION, ENLIGHTENMENT BY SELF-INQUIRY–pt64

Further contemplating Immortality, identify with just that Pure Existence & not with the form of anything else. That is vitally important when Death is considered. In contemplating such an experience, you should also clearly distinguish between the natural motions for survival, the workings of adrenal glands & similar physical responses, & actual the fear of Death, which is the fear of going out of Existence. You can simultaneously have the same abilities to physically respond, for those are physical matters, & at the same time know your Self as the Truth. Nature's way of attempting to preserve the bodily form as long as it can may continue as normal, but your inner Peace as Existence remains transcendently detached from all of it.

What is thought of as "external" is entirely in Consciousness, which is free from the Senses. The "external World" is a mere notion in Consciousness. Within the notion there appears the whole external World. It is one notion fragmented into the imagining of endless objects that are assumed to exist.  The one notion depends on the false "I am the Body" belief.  The World is a mere notion, an illusory appearance in one's own Mind. Therefore it is called Maya, Illusion. Illusion is that which is not. Since the World is unreal, it can offer no Bondage. Being unreal, the World does not actually come to exist.  This is the reason that Maya is said to be "beginningless".

That which is continuous is also enduring, that is permanent. That which is discontinuous is transitory. Therefore the State of Pure Existence is permanent & the Body & the World are not.  They are fleeting phenomena passing on the screen of ExistenceConsciousness which is Eternal & stationary.  The Deep Dreamless Sleep State is free from thoughts & the impression of thought on the Individual.  So Deep Dreamless Sleep cannot be altered by one's will because effort is impossible in that condition.  Although nearer to Pure Consciousness, it is not fit for efforts to realize the Self.

REALIZING NON–DUAL LIBERATION, ENLIGHTENMENT BY SELF-INQUIRY–pt63

Prana (LifeForce or Energy) can be said to enter & to exit the Body. One may regard the Prana as increasing & decreasing, or one may say the Prana remains the same & it is just that it is entering or exiting, or being particularized, or joining with the greater cosmic amount of Prana.  There are different ways of looking at this, but do "you" go in & out?  When the Body is alive & Prana seems to be animating it, are you in that Body ? If you find now that you are not in the Body, that there is clearly a distinction between the Body & you, & between the Prana & you, that very "you" is going to remain as it is after the Prana  no longer animates the Body. This Truth should become so totally your Identity that you are completely free. This is not theoretical. It is not even something meant to be only "believed" in, while you retain an experience that is otherwise.

The Seer of Truth is the Self, & the Self is Indivisible, Nonobjective, without exterior, undifferentiated, & 1withouta–2nd. Consciousness, Infinite & Undivided, sees none but Itself.  That which is not Consciousness does not see at all.  Lacking existence, that which is not Consciousness also lacks knowing.  As the Self, one does not see the World, & the World does not see oneself.  In Non-Duality, Pure Existence alone is Real. The World has never come to be, so it is said to be completely unreal. The World never was, is not, & never will be. The uncreated, unmodified, worldless Absolute alone exists. That alone exists, & That you are. The Real ever exists, & the unreal has never come to exists. The conclusion about this is known by the Knowers of Truth.

[Ramana]

When passing from Deep Dreamless Sleep to Waking the "I"thought [Individual self] must start & the Mind must come into play. Then thoughts arise & the functions of the Body come into operation. All these together make us say that we are awake.  The absence of all this is the characteristic of Deep Dreamless Sleep & therefore it is nearer to Pure Consciousness than the Waking State.   But one should not therefore desire to be always in Deep Dreamless Sleep.  In the first place it is impossible, for Deep Dreamless Sleep will necessarily alternate with the other 2 States.  Secondly it cannot be the State of Bliss in which the jnani is, for his state is permanent & not alternating. Moreover, the Deep Dreamless Sleep State is not recognised to be one of consciousness by people,  but the Sage is always aware. Thus the Deep Dreamless Sleep state differs from the state in which the Sage is established.
