ENLIGHTENMENT BY SELF-INQUIRY–pt215

Self-Realization could be brought about merely by giving up the idea that there is an individual self which functions through the Body & the Mind. A few of his advanced devotees were able to do this quickly & easily, but the others found it virtually impossible to discard the ingrained habits of a lifetime without undertaking some form of spiritual practice. Sri Ramana sympathized with their predicament & whenever he was asked to prescribe a spiritual practice which would facilitate Self-Awareness, he would recommend a technique he called Self-Inquiry.

The questions: "What becomes of the Body after Realization ?  Does it exist or not ?" need not arise now.  Let it be asked after Realization, if need be.  As for the Realized Beings let them take care of themselves.  Why do you worry about them ?  In fact after Realization, the Body & all else will not appear different from the Self.

Non-Duality is jnana; Duality is Samsara.  If you can give up duality, Brahman alone remains, & you know yourself to be that Brahman, but to make this discovery continuous Meditation is required.  Don't allocate periods of time for this.  Don't regard it as something that you do when you sit with your eyes closed. This Meditation has to be continuous.  Do it while you are eating, walking, & even talking.  Meditation has to be continued all the time.

Self-Knowledge is the way to destroy Ignorance & all its attendant Bondage & Suffering.  Self-Knowledge is the destruction, or transcendence, of the Dualism of Ignorance, & Self-Knowledge is the elimination of multiple states of Consciousness.  That is, Self-Knowledge reveals Consciousness as Pure as it is, free of differences & Duality.

The World, Individual, & God are all conceptions of the Ego–"I".  They arise only after the advent of the "I"–thought.  Did you think of them in your Deep Dreamless Sleep ?  You existed in Deep Dreamless Sleep & he same you are now speaking.  If they be real should they not be in your Deep Dreamless Sleep also ?  They are only dependent upon the "I"–thought.  Again does the World tell you: "I am the World" ?  Does the Body say "I am Body" ?  You say, "This is the World'', "this is Body'' & so on.  So these are only your conceptions.  Find out who you are & there will be an end of all your doubts.

Until the River reaches the Ocean, it is obliged to keep on flowing, but when it arrives at the Ocean, it becomes Ocean & the flow stops. The water of the River originally came from the Ocean. As it flows, it is merely making its way back to its Source. When you meditate or do sadhana, you are flowing back to the Source from which you came. After you have reached that Source, you discover that everything  that exists –  World, Guru, Mind – is one.  No differences or distinctions arise there.

Self-Knowledge starts with one's attempt to know the Truth.  It is the very substance, or means, or spiritual practice.  At the end, this Self-Knowledge is absorbed, or shines as, the Truth itself.  The Teachings given by the Maharshi & other wise Sages, Knowledge is prominent.

Bliss is coeval with Being-Consciousness.  All the arguments relating to the Eternal Being of that Bliss apply to Bliss also.  Your True Nature is Bliss.  Ignorance is not hiding that Bliss.  Remove the Ignorance for Bliss to be freed.

Bhagavan often used to say: "The physical Guru is outside, telling you what to do & pushing you into the Self.  The inner Guru, the Self within, simultaneously pulls you towards itself."  Once you have become established in the inner Guru, the Self, the distinction between Guru & disciple disappears.  In that state you no longer need the help of any Guru. You are That, the Self.

If one sees the only surface, one assumes a limited "I".  If one assumes a limited "I", one attaches oneself to superficial forms.  If one pursues to the Core, one finds the limitless "I".  If one looks from the limitless Self, one is free & Peace.

The Ignorance is identical with the "I"-thought.  Find its source & it will vanish.  The "I"-thought is like a spirit which, although not palpable, rises up automatically with the Body, flourishes & disappears with it.  The Body-consciousness is the wrong "I".  Give up this Body–consciousness.  It is done by seeking the source "I". The Body does not say "I am".  It is you who say, "I am the Body !"  Find out who this "I" is.  Seeking its Source & it ("I") will vanish.

The Guru guides you & tells you that what you have done is not enough.  If you are filling a bucket with water, you can always add more if there is still space.  But when it is completely full, full to overflowing, it is pointless to add even a single drop. You may think that you have done enough, & you may believe that your bucket is full, but the Guru is in a better position to see that there is still a space, & that more water needs to be added.  Don't rely on your own judgment in this matter.  The state you have reached may seem to be complete & final, but if the Guru says, "You need more sadhana," trust him & carry on with your efforts.

The real "I", or the Self, is free, happy within, & forever unblemished Perfection.  The Self always abides, is Formless, & is non-dependent on any Form, gross or subtle, the Body or the Mind.  Self-Realization is abidance as the "I"–less "I".  Self-Inquiry is the pursuit of Identity, of "I", to its core.

In fact it is already realized; there is nothing more to be realized.  Otherwise, the Realization will be new; it has not existed so far, it must take place hereafter. What is born will also die.  If Realization be not Eternal it is not worth having. Therefore what we seek is not that which must happen afresh.  It is only that which is Eternal but not now known due to obstructions; it is That we seek.  All that we need do is to remove the obstruction.  That which is Eternal is not known to be so because of Ignorance.  Ignorance is the obstruction.  Get over this Ignorance & all will be well.

You have to make an enormous effort to realize the Self.  It is very easy to stop on the way & fall back into Ignorance.  At any moment you can fall back. You have to make a strong determined effort to remain on the peak when you first reach it, but eventually a time will come when you are fully established in the Self.  When that happens, you cannot fall. You have reached your destination & no further efforts are required.  Until that moment comes, constant sadhana is required.

Self-Inquiry should determine the not–truly "I" (in the Absolute sense – Atman).  The "I" (in the false sense – Ego) itself depends on Delusions of Form in order to appear, for it has no Form of its own.

"I" exist always – Here & Now. Who says it: "the 'I' is not felt" ?  Does the real "I" say it or the false "I" ?  Examine this.  You will find it is the wrong "I".  The wrong "I" is the obstruction.  It has to be removed in order that the true "I" may not be hidden.  The feeling that: "I have not realized" is the obstruction to Realization.

By strength of practice, by doing this Self-Inquiry sadhana, the Veil will be removed completely. There will be no further hindrances. You can go to the top of Arunachala, but if you are not alert, if you are not paying attention, you may slip & end up at Isanya Math [a Hindu institution at the base of the Hill].

The "I"–notion, which is the cause of Bondage & Suffering, comes & goes.  The "I"–notion is always associated with Form, gross or subtle.  All Form is transient & actually un-Real.

You need not eliminate the wrong "I".  How can "I" eliminate itself ?  –  All that you need do is to find out its Origin & abide there.  Your efforts can extend only thus far.  Then the Beyond will take care of itself.  You are helpless there.  No effort can reach it.

A lamp that is lit may blow out if the wind is strong. If you want to see it again, you  have to relight it.  But Self is not like this.  It is not a flame that can be blown out by the passing winds of thoughts & desires. It is always bright, always shining, always there.  If you  are not aware of it, it means that you have put a curtain or a veil in front of it that blocks your view.  Self does not hide itself behind a curtain. You are the one who puts the curtain there by believing  in ideas that are not true. If the curtain parts and then closes again, it means that you are still believing in wrong ideas.  If you have eradicated them completely, they will not reappear.  While these ideas are covering up the Self, you still need to do constant sadhana.  The Self does not need to stabilize itself. It is full & complete in itself. The Mind can be stabilized or destabilized, but not the Self.
