ENLIGHTENMENT BY SELF-INQUIRY–pt125
Sri Ramana Maharshi says, "If the Self is formless, who
is to see ?" Where there is form attributed to yourself, there is Seeing
& something Seen, be it God or the World. Where the Self is known as
Formless, there is Pure Existence, not seeing.
Then all this Universe & God also are only my Self. Thinking that
you see the World, "who" actually sees what ? In illusion, what is it that we call
"this Universe" ? Who is the
Seer of it ? What is it that we call
"God" ? Who sees God? "If the Self is Formless, who is to see
?" If there is no seer, as implied in his rhetorical question, there is
only vast, unlimited Pure Existence.
The Mind cannot belong to the Self. The Self is ever unattached & cannot
belong to anything else. Therefore, the
Self is unaffected by anything done by the Mind. When Attachment is present, even as on the
notion of "possession", the possessor is as it were possessed by the "possession".
Since the Self is unattached to all,
including the Mind, the Self is possessed by none & is not affected by any.
If one becomes detached from all things in the World & to one's own thoughts
in the Mind, he finds that what he has reached was the Real
State of the Self all along.
[Ramana]
The Self alone exists & nothing
else. However, the Self seems as if differentiated owing to Ignorance. The apparent differentiation is 3–fold:
(1) of the same kind; (2) of a different kind; & (3) as parts in
itself. But The world is not another
Self similar to the Self. It is not different from the Self; nor is it part of the Self.
