ENLIGHTENMENT BY SELF-INQUIRY–pt128
Self-Inquiry clarifies our conception of the World, much as
it does our conception of the Individual self.
The world has Form as long as the idea that the Self has Form continues
to exist. If the Self is Formless, "who ?" is to see, whether such is
seeing God or seeing the World ? If the
Seer is Formless, do Seeing or the Seen exist ?
If the experiencer is
Formless, what remains of the experiencing
? What remains of the object of experience, the entire World,
& even of the experience of God ?
The Form idea of the Self is
only in oneself. The ideas of a Form of
the World & a Form of God are only in oneself. The idea
of the "external" is not indeed "external". If within
is the Self, & if the Self is Formless, who sees what ?
Consciousness is the Self, the true "I", which is
free from Ignorance, has no attributes,
no functions, & no qualities, & which is transcendent of all 3 States (Waking, Dream, Deep Dreamless Sleep).
Space-like & never tainted by any of the defects or limitations of the
beings it indwells, Consciousness alone is the Self. This Self is free from all notions, forms, &
actions. It is always without–a–2nd. Sri Sankara proclaims that as long as there is
no Self-Knowledge, the identification with the Body & such & the belief
in the authenticity of sense-perceptions continue, just as Dreams appear to be
true as long as one does not wake up.
[Ramana]
For the
Self-Realized jnani then, there is no distinction
between the 3 States of Mind. How can there be, when the Mind itself is
dissolved & lost in the Light of Consciousness ? For the Self-Realized jnani, all the 3 States are equally unreal. But the un–Self-Realized ajnani
is unable to comprehend
this, because for him the standard of reality is the Waking state, whereas for
the jnani the standard of Reality is Reality itself. This Reality of Pure Consciousness is Eternal
by its Nature & therefore subsists equally
during what you call Waking, Dreaming, & Deep Dreamless Sleep. To him who is One with that Reality there is
neither the Mind nor its 3 States [Waking, Dream, & Deep Dreamless Sleep] &, therefore, neither introversion [not seeing a World] nor extroversion [seeing a World] .
