ENLIGHTENMENT BY SELF-INQUIRY–pt131
Form is always of the nature of the attribution of some quality, some definition to the Seer, which is yourself. According to whatever quality or attribute is super–imposed
through imagination on the Seer, the
Seen, or object part appears likewise
through the vision of that super–imposition.
The definition of the Seer determines
the definition of the Seen. The Seer being with Form, with some kind of
definition, the Seen appears likewise.
In Delusion, the Seer is determined to be limited to the Form of the Body, rather than to be the limitless Self. The corresponding Seen object will be the Form of the World, which appears as if external to the Body. "There"
is some sense of Existence plus Time & space projected onto it. Existence does not have a Form. It is the "there" in our
experience, & it is also the "here".
Self-Inquiry negates all that is thought to make the Self
& Brahman different. One should meditate upon being only the Witness & not anything witnessed, whether the witnessed be a known conception or perception. The entire personal orientation should be utterly
abandoned. The Identity & Reality should be known as the Witness, & all
that is witnessed should be known as
not the Self & as unreal. The Meditator should discriminate more & more
finely between the Knower & the Known, so that Mis-identification ceases,
that is so that that super–imposition
of the Known upon the Knower ceases.
[Ramana]
The radio sings & speaks, but if you
open it you will find no one inside.
Similarly, the Existence of the Realized jnani is like
Space. The Body speaks like the radio,
but there is no one inside as a Doer.
The jnani can live & act
without the Mind, although living & acting seem to require the use of the
Mind. Illustrations given in books include the "Potter's Wheel"
turning round even after the Potter has ceased to turn it because the Pot is
finished. In the same way, the electric
fan goes on revolving for some minutes after we switch off the current. The prarabdha
[predestined karma] which created the Body will make it go through whatever activities
it was meant for. But the Self-Realized jnani
goes through all these activities without the notion that he is the Doer of
them.
